According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a Rhinoplasty is the second most popular plastic surgery procedure in America. Rhinoplasty concerns itself with reshaping a nose for either aesthetic or corrective purposes. It can reduce, enlarge or reshape the bridge or tip of almost any nose. It also concerns itself with the fitting of prosthetic or artificial noses. The last are mainly for patients who have suffered irreparable damage through accident or disease. We are going to discuss non-cosmetic Rhinoplasty here, i.e. procedures to repair damaged noses, not to merely improve the looks.

To be a good candidate for a Rhinoplasty you will obviously need to have a damaged nose. Be that from birth, through an accident or from diseases like cancer. The fact that the nose is so prominent means the effect of having a less than perfect one can affect somebody’s wellbeing more than someone with a more serious problem. It can affect self confidence and happiness, and therefore is a very important procedure for those kinds of patient.

A good surgeon will manage the expectations of the patient. Someone who expects a perfect nose at the end of it is going to be disappointed. A patient who thinks the procedure is going to make them into someone else is also going to be disappointed. The best candidates are those people who are not expecting miracles, but just want to look more “normal.” Age is also important, there is no maximum age, but the patient must be at least 16-18 in order for their growth period to have completed. Adding a static prosthetic or artificial nose to a patient who is still growing will cause problems later in life. Especially as their face begins to outgrow the nose.

Any new nose will have to be in proportion to the rest of the face. The surgeon will offer advice, take measurements and photographs and discuss the options. The patient may be offered a session with a 3D modeling system where they can almost design the nose before it’s created. It can give the clearest possible picture of what the patient will look like after the operation.

The operation itself only takes between an hour and two hours, and is often the smallest part of the whole process. With the vast majority of cases you will be in theater during the day and back in the comfort of your own home that night.

Once home, the patient should aim to completely rest for at least a week, preferably more. The better the conditions for healing, the better it will heal. Once the bruises have faded, and the nose healed it should look almost like new.
