Microtia

Microtia also called microtiaanotia , is a congenital deformity where the pinna (outer ear) is very small and under developed (Microtia)or absent (anotia). It can be unilateral ( meaning one side only) or bilateral ( affecting both sides). An artificial ear prosthesis commonly known as Auricular Prosthetic restores a portion or the entire outer ear . The artificial ear or auricular prosthesis provides a form of rehabilitation when surgical reconstruction is not viable or not preferred, especially in a child, since the growth factor does come in to play. An implant retained auricular prosthesis requires surgery for placement of the implants. This process has a healing period of approximately 10-12 weeks .

The prosthesis can in certain cases improve auditory reception.

In the event of wearing glasses or sunglasses, the auricular prosthesis will support them. Also it is possible to a conventional hearing aid with this prosthesis.

Microtia can cause problems with self-esteem, so early invention is highly recommended.
